I’m so excited to announce the second Shop Talk at Studio Technique. It’s a new division where renowned and experienced artists from the industry will come and share artistic insight, tutorials, their industry experience and offer a Q&A. It’s a great opportunity to learn from a variety of different artists, network, and gain some insight into different artistic venues. Most importantly, I hope it will be a place of artistic inspiration.

Robin Joseph will be the second guest speaker in the Shop Talk series.

ROBIN JOSEPH works as a freelance designer, collaborating closely with directors and writers developing the look, characters and visual language for their worlds! He has designed for animated features, television, commercials and print. His clients include Aardman Feature, Bluesky Studios, Sony Pictures Animation, Walt Disney Feature Animation, among many others.
In his spare time he chisels away developing his short film and consumes copious amounts of tea. He was born and raised in a small coastal town in South India. Robin currently lives in Toronto, Canada.

Hi everyone!

I'm so excited to start Shop Talk at Studio Technique. It's a new division where renowned and experienced artists from the industry will come and share artistic insight, tutorials, their industry experience and offer a Q&A. It's a great opportunity to learn from a variety of different artists, network, and gain some insight into different artistic venues.

Terry Lenko will be the first guest speaker in the Shop Talk series. He has worked in Toronto's animation industry for about fifteen years after graduating from Sheridan College's world renowned Classical Animation program. He has worked in both television and feature animation as a layout artist, location designer, character designer, storyboard artist and design supervisor. He spent several years teaching layout and storyboarding at Sheridan College in their new Bachelor of Applied Arts Animation Program. In his spare time he enjoys working on his own personal designs and story ideas, watching movies, being outdoors and spending time with his family.

Dr. Sketchy Montreal invites you to a premiere: an evening session at the new Studio Technique. We have the pleasure of welcoming the unique Cicatrix as our model, for an event inspired by the Arabian nights.

*Prenez Note: Les classes d'animation et de portfolio impliquent des travaux hebdomadaires.

CLASSE D'ANIMATION: Basée sur les principes de l'animation de Disney. On met l'emphase sur la compréhension de la physique et des fondements de l'animation ainsi que la façon de les appliquer à des scènes élaborées. Les étudiants apprendront aussi comment approcher une scène et la planifier efficacement.
*Note: Les étudiants ont besoin d'avoir l'équipement adéquat pour réalilser leur travaux d'animation à la maison. Il est possible de commander des peg bars et du papier d'animation via Studio Technique. Les étudiants peuvent aussi obtenir les détails pour se les procurer directement. Les étudiants doivent avoir une table lumineuse, un disque d'animation ou l'équipement équivalent. Réaliser les travaux en 3D par ordinateur est optionel, mais n'est pas encouragé. Il est important d'avoir une base visuelle solide des principes de l'animation, base qui se développe mieux sans logiciel. Veuillez contacter Studio Technique pour plus d'informations.

CLASSE DE PORTFOLIO DE DESIGN DE PERSONNAGE: La classe de design de personnage permettra de comprendre comment créer des designs uniques ainsi que d'identifier leurs personnalités et comment les illustrer. Les étudiants apprendront aussi comment passer de l'étape du concept à celle d'un design final de production.

CLASSE DE PORTFOLIO DE LAYOUT: Comprendre le layout et le design de décor pour l'animation. On met l'emphase sur le layout de cinéma, des scènes d'intérieur et d'extérieur, études de tons et perspective avancée.

CLASSE DE PORTFOLIO DE STORYBOARD: Le cours couvre les fondements du storyboard pour le cinéma en prise de vue réelle (live action) et pour le cinéma d'animation. On explore l'art de raconter une histoire visuellement et comment cela s'applique au jeu vidéo, au cinéma, à la télévision, aux romans graphiques, bande dessinées et comics.

* Please Note: The animation and portfolio classes will involve weekly assignments.

ANIMATION CLASS: Focuses on Disney Animation Principles. Strong emphasis on understanding the fundamentals and physics of animation and how they apply to more complicated scenes. Students will also learn how to properly approach and plan their scenes.
*Note: Students need to have the means to do their animation work at home. Peg bars and animation paper are available for order through Studio Technique or students can inquire as to where to purchase them directly. Students must have access to a lightbox, animation disc, or equivalent equipment. Doing assignments in 3D software is optional but not encouraged, as it is important to have a strong grasp on visual principles which are best developed outside of the software. CHARACTER DESIGN PORTFOLIO CLASS: The character design class provides an understanding on how to create unique character designs, as well as understanding their diverse personalities and how to portray them visually. Students will also learn to take character concepts to a final production design.

LAYOUT PORTFOLIO CLASS: Understanding layout and background design for animation. Emphasis on feature film layouts, interior and exterior shots, tonal studies and advanced perspective.

STORYBOARD PORTFOLIO CLASS: Covers the fundamentals of storyboarding for live action and animation. The course also touches upon visual storytelling and how it applies to video games, feature films, television, comics and graphic novels.

Each course is over a span of 10 weeks, with 1 class per week for 3 hours a class, with the exception of Drawing 1 which is held for 2 hours. Due to popular demand, some courses are being offered with more than one time slot option.

DRAWING 1: Introductory course in drawing. Involves the study of still life, analysis of plane breaks, basic perspective, composition, form and basic lighting techniques.

DRAWING 2: Introduction to figure drawing. Focuses on fast poses for gesture and movent, as well as longer studies to break down the figure into simple forms and planes.

DRAWING 3: Bringing perspective into the figure. Focuses on more complicated poses and studies with contrapposto. Study of the skeleton and major muscle groups.

DRAWING 4: Involves advanced drawing techniques, chiaroscuro, trois crayons, lighting and tonal studies of the figure. This course accumulates all the knowledge acquired in the previous levels and brings it together to create more finished drawings.

PORTRAITURE: Focus on individualized portraits with models.

COSTUME DRAWING CLASS: Study of drapery techniques and costume on a live model. Only available to students who have taken Drawing 2 or higher, or have an equivalent portfolio.

**7 people must be registered in order for the course to take place. Should the course be cancelled because of attendance, those who have registered will be fully reimbursed or given the option of a different time slot.

La session s'étend sur une période de 10 semaines, comprenant un cours de 3 heures chaque semaine, à l'exception des classes Dessin 1, qui sont d'une durée de 2 heures chacune. À la demande générale, quelques cours sont offerts avec plusieurs plages horaires.

DESSIN 1: Classe d’introduction au dessin. Inclus l’étude de la nature morte, compréhension des objets en 3D, la perspective, la forme et la composition, et des techniques de l‘ombre et de la lumière.

DESSIN 2: Classe d’introduction au modèle vivant. L’emphase est mise sur des dessins rapides, sur la gestualité vive et aussi sur l’analyses du corps en divers plans et formes simples avec des poses plus longues.

DESSIN 3: Intégrer la notion de perspective au corps. L’emphase est mise sur des positions plus complexes avec contrapposto. Étude du squelette humain et des principeaux groupes musculaires.

DESSIN 4: Classe avancée. Inclus des techniques de finition, de clair’obscure, trois crayons, l’étude de lumière et de ton sur la figure. Cette classe accumule toutes les connaissances des classes précédentes et les réunient pour créer des dessins avec plus de finition.

CLASSE DE MODELE AVEC COSTUME: Étude des techiniques de drapés et l’application sur le modèle costumé. Requiert un niveau de technique intermédiaire (Dessin 2 ou l’équivalent en expérience).

ART DU PORTRAIT: La classe est dirigée vers les portraits individuels des modèles.

Au minimum 7 personnes doivent s'inscrire afin que le cours ait lieu. Si une classe doit être cancellée par manque de participants, il y aura possibilité de remboursement complet ou l'option de choisir une plage horaire différente.

Samantha Youssef, Directrice Artistique du Studio Technique, a travaillé dans des studios tels que Walt Disney Animation, Ubisoft, Filmax, et Yowza Animation. Au Studio Technique, nous croyons que le dessin est un langage. Nous oeuvrons dans l'esprit d'encourager la poésie chez l'artiste avancé. Au plus débutant, nous enseignerons les mots et la grammaire du dessin pour qu'ils apprennent à communiquer au moyen de cet art. Nous offrons des cours pour tous les niveaux allant des notions de bases à des cours conçus pour les besoins des professionnels de l'industrie. Des sessions de modèle vivant ouvertes à tous sans enseignant sont aussi offertes pour ceux qui voudraient poursuirvre leur démarche personnelle.

Studio Technique offers classical life drawing instruction which is the core of any artistic discipline. Our focus is to provide a strong foundation in drawing which will not only strengthen the abilities of the fine artist, but also provide the training needed by commercial artists, such as those in the animation, illustration, graphics and comic book industries.

Samantha Youssef, the artistic director of Studio Technique has worked in companies such as Walt Disney Animation, Ubisoft, Filmax, and Yowza Animation. Studio Technique is responsible for the artistic training of many of the local Montreal gaming studios such as Bioware, Electronic Arts Montreal, and Ubisoft.

At Studio Technique, we believe drawing is a language. We strive to encourage the poetry in the advanced artist, and teach the words and grammar of drawing to the beginner so they too can learn to speak it. There are courses for all levels of artists, from the first time artist to specialized courses designed for the needs of industry professionals. Uninstructed drop-in sessions with a model are also available for those who wish to practice on their own time.
